Expansion of VA Process for 72-Hour Notification of Emergency Treatment

What happened

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) finalized a rule to add a new web-based method for veterans, their representatives, and eligible entities or providers to notify VA for authorization of emergency treatment under the Veterans Community Care Program (VCCP). This new method will be accessible through www.va.gov/resources/getting-emergency-care-at-non-va-facilities/ or a successor website. The previous method of notifying the nearest VA facility remains an option. This rule is effective August 10, 2026. This final rule was designated as a deregulatory action under Executive Order 14192.

Why it matters

This change streamlines the notification process, making it easier for veterans to get their emergency care authorized. By providing an additional, efficient method for reporting, it aims to increase efficiency and avoid confusion without imposing new regulatory requirements or significant economic impact.

Who it affects

  • Veterans receiving emergency care
  • Representatives of veterans
  • Eligible entities or providers of care
