Air Plan Approval; Michigan; Clean Data Determination for the Berrien, MI and Muskegon, MI Areas for the 2015 Ozone Standards
What happened
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that Berrien County and Muskegon County, Michigan, have attained the 2015 ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). This determination is based on air monitoring data for 2023-2025 and an exceptional events request from Michigan's EGLE, which the EPA concurred on January 12, 2026. This action was signed by Donald Trump and is effective October 9, 2026.
Why it matters
As a result, Berrien and Muskegon areas are no longer required to submit attainment demonstrations, control measures, or progress plans related to the 2015 ozone NAAQS. This suspension of requirements continues as long as these areas maintain attainment of the ozone standards.
