Attainment Date Extension for the South Coast, California 2012 Annual PM2.5 Fine Particulate Matter Nonattainment Area
What happened
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted an extension for the Los Angeles-South Coast Air Basin to meet the 2012 annual PM2.5 national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS). The original attainment date of December 31, 2025, has been moved to December 31, 2030. This final action was signed by Donald Trump and is effective November 2, 2026, based on the State satisfying statutory criteria.
Why it matters
This extension means the South Coast Air Basin has more time to implement measures to reduce fine particulate matter in the air. While it provides flexibility for the State, it also means residents in the affected area will continue to experience air quality that does not meet federal standards for a longer period.
